Loading the Bobbin

Remember there are two types of bobbin loading systems, drop-in & vertical loading. You need to identify what type your machine has.

I highly recommend watching both portions of this to improve your understanding of how it works, especially the tension portion.

Now remove the bobbin from the bobbin winder.

Drop-In Bobbin

  • Remove the trapdoor covering the bobbin loader
  • Put it to the side, be sure not to lose it
  • Pull the thread off the left-hand side of the bobbin
  • The curve of the bobbin & the tail should create the shape of a “P”
  • Remember this by “P for Perfect”
  • Doing this guarantees your tension is correct & stays threaded during use
  • Drop the bobbin in place, still having the thread come off the left-hand side
  • Pull the thread forward through the first slit & then backward, to the back of the machine
  • Double check the tension by gently popping the bobbin out & making sure the thread makes a sharp angle
  • If it doesn’t, flip it & drop it back in
  • Leave the trapdoor off for now
  • Move on to the top thread

Vertical/Front-Loading Bobbin

  • More old school/traditional way of loading a bobbin
  • Open the bobbin door
  • Remove the casing using the hinged handle
  • Pull the thread off the bobbin from the right side
  • This is the opposite of the drop-in bobbin
  • The curve of the bobbin & tail should make the shape of a lower case “q”
  • This guarantees your tension is correct & will stay threaded
  • Hold the bobbin casing, this time without the hinged handle
  • Place the bobbin in the casing still having the thread come off the right-hand side
  • Pull the thread through the slit, then backwards, sliding it between the casing & outer strip of metal
  • Pull until the thread comes out the opening on the side
  • Double check the tension by gently popping the bobbin out & making sure the thread makes a sharp angle
  • If it doesn’t, flip it & put it back in
  • Hold the casing by the hinged handle to lock it in to place while you load it into the machine so it doesn’t fall out
  • Have the small arm of the casing pointed up while you fit into the machine
  • The casing will fit snugly into the machine
  • If it doesn’t fit snugly, you are putting it in wrong
  • It only fits in one way
  • Leave the bobbin door open for now
  • Move on to the top of your machine
