Threading the Top of the Machine

Any machine can be threaded in a few simple steps, as long as you can identify three important parts of the machine. You will need to find the tension, hook, & needle.

Tension

  • Pull the thread off of the spool & bring it down through the tension
  • Make sure your pressure foot is up if it needs to be for your machine
  • The thread needs to slip properly between the tension disks

Hook

  • Bring the thread up towards the hook, making sure the tension doesn’t become unthreaded in the process
  • Goal here: threading the eye of the hook
  • Modern machines have an opening to make this easier
  • Bring the thread to the back of the opening & then pull it towards the front of the machine
  • If there isn’t an opening, you can simply thread the eye of the hook
  • Be sure the thread doesn’t cross itself, as it will cause friction & break the thread

Needle

  • Bring the thread down towards the needle
  • Thread the eye of the needle from front to back, pulling the thread out the back
  • The needle is threaded away from the operator, unless your user manual says otherwise
  • Pull the thread 3-5 inches out of the needle so it doesn’t become unthreaded

The top of your machine is now threaded. You can double check this by following the threads path from the spool, through the tension, the hook, & the needle. If you are going in that order, your machine is threaded correctly.
