Raising Your Bobbin Thread

Raising your bobbin thread is the last step of threading your machine & it cannot be skipped. This step pulls the bobbin thread from the bottom of the machine up to the top of the machine. When you are done with this step the bobbin thread will come up through the small needle hole in the stitch plate.

This step is complicated the first few times you do it. That’s ok. Again, practice helps make it easier.

  • Hold the thread firmly in your left hand & off to the side of the machine
  • Thread should be taught, but not run
  • Turn the handwheel towards you, one full stitch
  • The hook should start at the top, go all the way down & return to the top
  • If you stop before the hook gets back to the top, this step won’t fully work
  • A loop will appear in the needle hole
  • This is the bobbin thread coming up out of the bottom of the machine to the top
  • Grab the loop & pull it until the end of the tail comes out of the needle hole, turning the loop into a tail
  • Pull both tails under the pressure foot and to the back of the machine

Shortened version for repetition:

1. Hold the top thread taught in your hand & turn the handwheel one full stitch

2. A loop will appear in your needle hole

3. Grab the loop & pull until the bobbin tail comes out of the needle hole

4. Pull both tails under the pressure foot & to the back of the machine
